Dr. Rajaratnam's 89th Birthday Celebrations


Dr. Kunchala Rajaratnam's 89th Birthday was celebrated by the Gurukul Community, following the Staff and Students Retreat on August 6, 2008. It was a simple but elegant function. Archbishop of the Madras-Mylapore Diocese Dr. Chinnappa presided over the programmes and gave his Birthday greetings. Dr. Rajaratnam's family members were also present.

Dr. Ponniah Manoharan in his introductory speech has succinctly reviewed the various ways in which Gurukul community owes its present status to Dr. Rajaratnam. He particularly mentioned how Dr. Rajartnam is held in high esteem by the secular community and has referred to the various Birthday celebrations which started even several days before the actual Birthday of Rajartnam in different parts of the country. Special reference was made to the one which was held on Aug 5, 2008 at Renugunta in Andhra Pradesh organized by the Dr. KRC Educational Institutions and KLM Hospitals where eminent persons like Dr. M.D. Christopher, Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Higher Secondary Education Board, Prof. Dr. Rathnam (Vice-Chancellor, SV Univeristy, Tirupati, Prof. Dr. Venkatarami Reddy Rev. Dr. P. Manoharan, Director Gurukul, Dr. T. D. Prasanna Kumar Director Krupa Paricharya, Kadapa, Rt. Rev. K.M. V. Prasad (Bishop SALC), Rev. Victor Johnson Jaya Kumar (Pastor, St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Jeevagram) were present. In Gurukul Celebrations Archbishop Dr. Chinnappa's erudite as well as humorous address was the main feature. He praised Dr. Rajaratnam's simplicity and pointed out that only truly great people can be so simple and effective. Gurukul Philarmonica rendered a special innovative number which was highly praised by Dr. Chinnappa, himself being an accomplished musician. He described how the raga Sankarabharanam was variously and innovatively used by the Protestant musicians for different compositions and praised the Philarmonica group led by Mr Shibin Varghese (B.D. III) for the creative fusion of Sanakrabharanam raga to different Indian language compositions. The College Community profusely showered upon Dr. Rajaratnam its sincere prayers as he entered into a new year of bold vision and courageous leadership.
